Structured Oral Examination – Student’s Perspective

S. V. Kshirsagar, Dr. S. P. Fulari.

Abstract
In the medical field, the oral examination is the most preferred mode of assessment and is still used in our undergraduate medical examination. Although there are examples of organizations restructuring their oral examinations to a structured oral examination (SOE) format, recent research describing the students response to the SOE has been limited especially compared to OSCE formats. One of the query raised against the implementation of the SOE is that, whether it will be accepted by the students. The present study was to receive and analyze the student’s perspectives regarding the structured oral examination and to see if it is acceptable by the students or not. In the present study, oral examination was conducted by conventional as well as SOE method for 45 volunteer students. The result by both the methods was conveyed and responses were collected from the students. It was observed that, the students responded positively to SOE and will accept it as a method of assessment if implemented.

Key words: Oral examination, conventional method, SOE, student’s perspectives
