Abstract

The study of world religions has been a very important part of Muslim scholarship. It evolved gradually like the other Islamic sciences. Some writers seem to see the Muslim contributions to what came to be known today as the discipline of Comparative Religion or The History of Religions were either polemical or apologetic, and at best unscientific. This is because the Muslim writers did not make any significant breakthrough in theorizing in the field, or present any methodological ideas of significance. The present writer is of different view especially when al-Bīrūnī’s study of religion is the focus of scrupulous and objective research. This paper is an attempt at highlighting the contributions of this Muslim
