Free Radicals scavenging effect of Dillenia indica leaves

Abstract
Objective: In this study, methanolic leaves extract of Dillenia indica, belonging to family Dilleniaceae, was screened to evaluatethe free-radical scavenging effect.
Methods: The antioxidant activity was measured by various in vitro models e.g. reducing power effect, DPPH free radical,superoxide radical, hydroxyl radical and nitric oxide inhibition methods.
Results: The leaves extract exhibited significant reducing power and free radical scavenging effect on DPPH free radical,superoxide radical, hydroxyl radical, and nitric oxide production. All these antioxidant activities were concentration dependentwhich were compared with standard antioxidants such as BHA, alpha tocopherol and ascorbic acid. In addition, total phenoliccontents of leaves extract were determined as gallic acid equivalents and total flavonoid was determined as catechin
equivalents.
Conclusion: The highest antioxidant activity of D. indica leaves extract was observed at a concentration of 2500 µg/ml. Dilleniaindica is good source of antioxidants. So, it can useful for management of various diseases.
