Knowledge and awareness of medical laboratory students about chemical materials

Objective: The aim of this study was to raise awareness and to increase the level of knowledge of Medical Laboratory students about the chemical substances used by the Medical Laboratory.
Materials and Methods: A survey study with cross-sectional research design was conducted as questionnaire study. Legal permission was obtained for the study and Medical Laboratory students of a public university were included in the research. Each student was informed about the purpose of the research and the questionnaire form, and giving verbal consents were included in the study. Data gathering in the survey was carried out questionnaire under the observation that consist of 42 questions and 3 sections. SPSS for Windows 22.0” package program was used in the evaluation of the data.
Results: : A total of 175 students participated in the survey. 78% of the participants were female. The average age of the participants was 19,42 ± 1,84. 30% of the participants graduated from the health profession. 73% of the participants had taken "Chemistry and Chemistry Application" course during high school education. 73% of students correctly were identified all of the laboratory safety related pictograms. 63% of the participants were thought of medical laboratories as risky work areas in terms of occupational health and safety. 51% were known that chemistry with volatile properties should be stored at + 4⁰C. 72% of students were conscious of that chemical wastes should not be poured into sinks or open areas. 100% of theirs were known that should use a gloves, 92% were needed to wear safety goggles and 60% were used a stove when working with such chemicals.
Conclusion: The data obtained show that the level of knowledge about the occupational risks of the students should be increased. Within this scope, it is recommended to inform the students regularly and organize training programs.
