Midcarpal mini-open surgery in the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome

Abstract
Objectives: The aim of this study is to decrease scar discomfort and pillar pain of carpal tunnel syndrome surgery results which were performed with mini invasive surgery. We preferred to use mini invasive method to preserve the pillar area which is one of the most intensive area for subcutaneous nerve and which is containing most contact area within the hand.
Methods: The study included 200 hands of 160 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome at Akdeniz University in between January 2006 - December 2010. All hands were operated by the same surgeon with mini incision which was made through distal of transvers carpal ligament at midpalmar region. Two-hundred hands evaluated with Boston symptom severity and functional state scale, grip and pinch strength, patient satisfaction results.
Results: We achieved statistically significant improvement with grip and pinch strength .In postoperative period we achieved significant improvement according to Boston symptom severity and functional state scale. Patient’s satisfaction of the procedure was 96.5%.
Conclusion: Successful results can be achieved with midpalmar mini-incision method which is a reliable, cheap and effective method.
