Mathematics, systems science, and engineering for stem cell research

Sencer Yeralan.

Abstract
The title, “Stem Cell Fundamentals and Practice” sets the domain of the publication. We seek the facilitation of dissemination of information regarding work on stem cells. A complex topic like “stem cells” must be studied through many different areas and in a multitude of modalities. The journal pursues this by the inclusion of the largest possible set of contributing fields. Not only cell biology, but also molecular chemistry, statistics, mathematics, and systems sciences are included. Besides the basic sciences, we attempt to integrate applied sciences such as medicine and engineering into the discussions. Moreover, we welcome philosophy to help build a framework for the classification and description of new knowledge that is expected to emerge. Twentieth Century philosophy questions the validity of claims regarding progress in science [1, 2]. Top on the list of challenges point to a lack of an axiological foundation that would define what is the value of science and what is its goals. Luckily for the more applied fields of science, local and relative utility is often sufficient. When medicine restores the health of an individual, the physician is rewarded. Accordingly, the “Practice” in the title promotes this practical aspect of the endeavor.
