Prebiotics are dietary components in the form of indigestible carbohydrate targeting intestinal flora in humans. In the literature there has been a number of in vivo and vitro studies on prebiotics conducted since 1995. The effect of prebiotics on the intestinal health is an area in food science in which more intensive studies were conducted. The purpose of this review article is to bring together and interpret the results of the studies investigating the physiological and bifidogenic effects of prebiotics on the intestinal health and to shed light on new studies.
