Vaidya KA, Vernekar P.

This is a study conducted at malaria endemic area, comprised of 175 confirmed cases of acute malarial infestation in which total WBC count was performed by automated hematology analyser before starting antimalarial drugs. We analyzed and compared the WBC counts of these uncomplicated malaria patients. Leukopenia was observed in 20% of the patients. Leukocytosis, on the other hand, was noted in around 4.57%. Leukopenia can be identified as one of the useful indicators along with thrombocytopenia in predicting the possibility of malaria in endemic areas.
