Electroencephalography findings in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder

Aim: The role of functional brain pathology in the etiology of obsessive
compulsive disorder (OCD) is often determined by proton emission
tomography (PET), single photon emission computerized tomography
(SPECT) and electroencephalography (EEG). EEG has important
advantages including non-invasiveness, feasibility and cost
effectiveness. The aim of this study was to compare EEG findings of
OCD group with normal healthy controls and investigate the effects of
some clinical and demographic factors in the OCD group on EEG

Methods: In this prospective study, 46 patients were diagnosed as
OCD according to DSM-IV criteria in a psychiatry clinic between July
2003 and December 2003 were compared with forty-six normal
healthy control who did not have any neurological or psychiatric
disorders. Standard EEG recording was recorded only in the resting
period without using any activation methods.

Results: There was no significant difference between the patients and
control group regarding sex and age (p>0.05). EEG abnormalities
were found in 52.2% of OCD group and 13% of the control group
