Objective: Antipsychotic drugs may cause serious cardiovascular side-effects, including prolonged QT interval, eventually leading to torsades de pointes and sudden death. In this study, the differential effects of antipsychotic drugs on ECG parameters, particularly on QTc, is investigated.
Method: Sixty-nine patients with schizophrenia diagnosed according to DSM-IV diagnostic criteria who were drug-free for at least one month were randomized to participate in this study. The electrocardiogram of patients were performed at the beginning and two months later, and assessed by two independent cardiologists.
Results: In this study, differential effects of antipsychotics (clozapine, olanzapine, risperidone, quetiapine, sulpride, haloperidol) indicated that clozapine has caused a statistically signiŞcant change on heart rate (p
