Atomoxetine for the Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Objective: Although it is known that stimulants for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder were quite effective and reliable, alternative treatments are also needed. The aim of this article is to review the recent researches about atomoxetine which started to become importantfor the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in recent years. Method: A group of researchers that are specialized on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder prepared the review by searching the data bases (Pubmed, Ovid and Medline) about atomoxetine application for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Results: Up till now, findings about atomoxetine showed that it is quiet effective for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and it is quite important alternative especially for the cases comorbid with anxiety, tic, and alcohol-substance abuse. Atomoxetine was preferred for the treatment of cases that needs 24 hour duration effect; shows resistance or intolerance to stimulants and situations that is appropriate to take one dose a day. According to recent review of researches about atomoxetin, it illustrates similar side effects with stimulants. Discussion: It seems that atomoxetine is effective and well tolerated alternative for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
