RAPID DETECTION OF METALLO-β-LACTAMASE IN CARBAPENEM RESISTANT CLINICAL ISOLATES OF PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA AND ACINETOBACTER SPECIES

Abstract
Ninety four MDR strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and thirty two strains of Acinetobacter species were screened for Metallo-β-Lactamase (MBL). A double disk potentiation method by using meropenem and meropenem with 930 μg of EDTA, disks was used. Isolates showing enlargement of the diameter of growth inhibitory zone ≥ 7mm were considered as MBL producers. A total of 98 isolates were found to be MBL positive. MBL was detected in 70 (74.46%) isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 28 (87.5%) of Acinetobacter species. The results indicates double disk potentiation test for detection of MBL was easier, reliable and rapid method.
