Detection of Potentially Pathogenic E. coli O157H7 in Buffalo Meat Samples by Conventional and Molecular Methods

Abstract
Escherichia coli O157 is the classical serotype having zoonotic significance. E. coli O157 has been reported to cause not only diarrheal illness but also hemorrhagic colitis (HC), haemorrhagic uremic syndrome (HUS) and thrombotic thrombocytopaenic purpurea (TTP). In the present study, 150 raw buffalo meat samples were collected from the retail meat market viz. muscle, ground beef, intestine, liver and lung (30 each) from Anand, India. All the samples were screened for VTEC O157, using conventional culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Among 150 buffalo meat samples 3 (2%) were found positive for E. coli O157 by conventional culture as well as for amplification of rfb O157 gene by PCR. The presence of E. coli O157 in the buffalo meat samples of Anand, Gujarat suggests that this enteropathogen may be of public health importance. Hence, routine screening of buffalo meat samples for VTEC O157 may be useful.
